INDERHAVNEN BRIDGE, COPENHAGEN ( BRIDGE LENGTH 180M, OPENING 50M )

The winner of an invited design competition with ten invited teams, among them Zaha Hadid, Arup, 3XN, Henning Larsen etc. The bridge links Nyhavn with a route leading to the new Opera House. The opening part utilises a unique sliding mechanism - two large sculptural cantilevers move between visually and structurally subservient fixed decks. When the bridge is open people can stand on viewing platforms at the edge of the navigation channel - a unique experience on an opening bridge. The Jury said among others : “(…) urban architecture aspects rooted in the historic qualities of Copenhagen (…) taking its starting point from the Nordic traditions, the entrant sought inspiration in the opportunity to optimise functionality and create a new public space rather than letting the bridge be an exponent of an extravagant staged structural form(…) the suggested incorporation of the bridges in the urban architecture is of very high quality(…)”. Construction of the bridge was commenced in 2011.
