NEW MULBERRY COTTAGE, DUMMER, HAMPSHIRE

The project involved demolition of an existing building and creation of a new house in its place. The 7400m2 site is located on the edge of the village of Dummer in a rural setting with very few buildings near it. While the new house draws inspiration from the simple and purposeful aesthetics of agricultural buildings it was also inspired by the nearby Berrydown Court, Ashe, in Overton built by Edwin Lutyens in 1897-8, as well as the 1981 Chester House by James Gowan. Our design takes off where Gowan left, seeking contemporary interpretation of the traditional idiom. The proposed building aimed to be unfussy, purposeful and elegant, classic in its simplicity and symmetry. Its scale is in harmony with the large size of the plot. The roof and side gables of the new house are clad in red ceramic tiles, the white rendered wall panels of the ground floor echo traditional Japanese architecture. Planning permission was obtained in 2008 but so far the house has not been built.
