LIMITED FACILITY TUNNELS AND FLYOVERS FOR OUTWARD TRAFFIC BIAS ON ROADS

Highways Agency sought innovative design and management techniques to reduce congestion and pollution in cities ( DETR: Transport 2010 ). We were the only architects on a shortlist otherwise composed of large engineering practices. Our team won the tender on the basis of our proposed research team composition, proposed research methodology and cost. The HA thesis was : would making exit from cities easier and faster, for example for leisure, help to attract people back to living in cities. This unusual project involved an extensive two-year traffic, social, pollution and design study analysing the idea of one-way-cars-only roads and tunnels leading out of cities. The project included an actual design study involving a tunnel solution at Richmond Circus in West London. The tunnel entrance and exit structures, which acted as acoustic and glare screens, were also explored as urban identity markers. Project completed in 2002.
