MERTHYR TYDFIL, PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE OVER TAFF AND A470 ( main span 85 m )

A competition study for a bridge intended as a playful public structure humanising bleak urban environment and connecting a town centre car park with a shopping centre and the main square of Merthyr Tydfil In Wales. The bridge spans the A470 and the river Taff, and is sited directly over a weir. It is a novel adapted stress ribbon structure carried by a set or linked arches. Our intention was to create an elongated piazza with trees and a canopy over a part of it, more as an Urban Room than a rudimentary crossing. Our design featured in a 1995 Architects Journal Centenary Exhibition, 1994 Architecture of Bridge Design Conference / Exhibition in London, and the 1995 Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition in London.
