THE ROYAL VICTORIA DOCK PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE, LONDON

Seven design teams were short listed in this 1995 London Docklands Development Corporation competition to design a 200m long footbridge across the Royal Victoria Dock. It was to connect Silvertown on the south to the ExCel exhibition centre on the north, with a 15m clearance for tall-masted ships. We submitted two optional designs addressing high levels of exposure of the crossing and the prevailing weather conditions both were covered structures. Our first design, with a budget of £4 million and 150m clear span, was a steel plate structure with glass infill. In addition to banks of lifts access to the high deck was by way of almost baroque curved stairs housed in conical glass clad towers. The second design, with a budget £5 million, 100m clear span in steel and glass featured a 25m wide mechanically openable floating section with no height restrictions.

Happy Pontist opined here that our designs seem the most successful at resolving the difficult end towers.
