TOTTENHAM HALE, RIVER LEE BRIDGES, LONDON
We won this contract through a competitive tender involving ideas and fees. It involved an urban identity project consisting of, among others, refurbishment of three existing bridges as an urban gateway. The existing ‘Hennebique’ concrete bridges on Ferry Lane (A503) had solid concrete parapets, which were difficult to maintain, and shielded the attractive views of the adjacent landscape from the motorists. The parapets were removed and replaced with cast bronze assemblies. Each new bronze double upright carries a green cast glass lantern. Urban marking was further reinforced through an inclined light mast (‘after Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen everyday object inspired’), which replaced all traditional lamp posts on the bridges. The masthead is separated from the main body of the mast by a blue glass block which is lit from inside. The refurbished bridges also feature modified TRIEF kerbs cast in blue mass coloured concrete. The blue colour was inspired by Ives Klein’s sculptures. The use of TRIEF kerbs allowed us to reduce structural characteristics of the new bridge parapets to those catering only for pedestrians, with vehicular impact contained by the kerbs.
